This number is staggering, but it doesn’t have to be this way. There are many ways that you can help reduce the number of animals who need to be rehomed, such as adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue group instead of buying one from a pet store or breeder.

The problem of pet overpopulation first started in the United States in the early 1900s, when many pets were being abandoned due to the popularity of dogs for hunting and for work. This led to an increase in stray animals.

Animal shelters and animal control agencies grew as a result of this problem. Now, there are too many animals being put down because they couldn ‘t be adopted, and there is too much pressure on shelters to keep up with demand.

There are over 6 million dogs in animal shelters in the U.S., and about 4 million cats. Some of these animals were originally abandoned, and some were purchased as pets.

About 3 million animals each year are euthanized because they can’t be adopted, which means euthanasia is the largest cause of death for pets in animal shelters. There are steps that can be taken to reduce this number, such as spaying and neutering animals, adopting from animal shelters and animal control agencies, getting a rescue license, or having your vet neuter your pet for you.

There are 8 million unwanted dogs in the world at any given time. In the United States alone, there are approximately 6-8 million homeless dogs at any given time. In the United States, 3.3 million (1 out of every 4) dogs entering shelters are euthanized because they don’t have a home.
